Vintage Austin: Moonlight Towers
Beginning in 1894, Moonlight Towers were built in downtown Austin to provide safety and convenience to the residents of Austin. Each night, a worker would use an elevator to transport himself to the top of the tower to light the carbon arc lamps. Today, 17 of the original 31 towers stand and continue to illuminate the night sky over Austin. Below is the tower located at 15th and San Antonio.
