Vintage Austin: Kite Fest

Photo Credit: Austin History Center, PICA 14133

The description of this Vintage Austin photo notes the group of kids are in a field, participating in the annual kite contest in 1942. From what I learned while researching for Episode 40 of Discover Austin, I know the long running ABC Kite Fest traces its roots back to 1929 when the first event was organized by The Exchange Club of Austin. It began as a small competition for kids flying homemade kites. Over the years, it has evolved into a massive, family-friendly event.

With so little information for this photo, I can only hope its a glimpse at the modest beginnings of a beloved Austin tradition and the country's longest running kite festival!
