This Vintage Austin photo, titled "Congress Avenue Before 1875," captures Congress Avenue with the old Capitol building (1853-1881) in the background and horse-drawn buggies on the street. The Capitol building shown in this photo was later replaced by the current one in 1888.

During the 1870s, Congress Avenue was bustling with general stores, blacksmith shops, livery stables, saloons, and hotels. This era laid the foundation for the iconic Congress Avenue that we cherish today.
