Yesterday, AT&T announced that it is brining ultrafast internet access to Austin by the middle of 2014. The internet speeds will reach up to 100 gigabits per second which is about 100 times faster than traditional hi-speed internet that we currently have. This is in direct competition with what Google plans. Both companies have been granted waivers so that they can target which areas of town they will serve (generally companies have to serve the whole city). AT&T is currently asking interested residents to register online so they can determine where the most interest is and those will be the areas that get service. You can register online at http://www.att.com/austinfiber. Google, of course, did the same thing but has not yet announced which areas are getting the new service. AT&T also announced that 300 megabit service will be available in some areas starting in December. Prices have not yet been released.
