Spread over two counties – Williamson and Travis – Leander is one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas, with an economy that has been spurred on by the wonderful variety of businesses and people moving to Central Texas and Austin. While other cities are still at work, figuring out the best way to provide access between the suburbs and downtown, Leander is already part of Austin’s Capital MetroRail. As the northernmost stop on the line, the city provides a Park & Ride station and express bus lines, for those days you don’t want to worry about parking downtown.
History buffs will be excited to learn about “Leanderthal Lady”, a skeleton found on an archaeological site that dates back to 10,000 to 13,000 years. This discovery is one of the earliest and most intact burials found in all of the United States. To learn more about the discovery, read more here.
The City of Leander has a comprehensive website, here, which provides new residents with maps, events calendars, and all other local information. If you’re interested in getting involved quickly with your new community, the events calendar is a great place to start – the city includes parenting classes, Zumba, story times for children (both in English and Spanish), and City Council meetings. For those searching for other educational options, Leander Center is affiliated with Austin Community College, and offers evening classes in a range of subjects.
Continuing with the Austin-wide tradition of inspiring residents to step outside, Leander is home to nine parks, scattered throughout town, one of which even has a disc golf course. For fans of standard golf, Crystal Falls Golf Club has a beautiful course filled with water features, and native Texas wildlife. Leander’s Parks and Recreation is also extremely active: it hosts various programs such as the Active Adult Programs, athletics, fitness classes, and swimming lessons.
Perhaps one of the best things about Leander is the fact that it is still growing. The city has plans for development of its parks, roads, retail areas, office spaces, all of which are detailed on the city’s website.
